Star Trek Gryphon Class
The Mantaray Class Escort Vessel was first tested at the beginning of 2411, with the intention of replacing older Escort and Support vessels. As the Cocoon Fleet emerged from a war against the Klingons, it's Fleetyards on Gaia saw the need for a new vessel that was small, yet carried and armament that would make it capable of dealing with considerably larger threats. The Gryphon class runabout was a design sitting in the records for some time until Starfleet Intelligence put it into production for its own use. Following this, a limited run of the model and its variant the Stormcrow were put into production for use on some Federation starships and bases.

Opening dialogue for the first Chat Mission on 9908.08:
Let me introduce you to the USS Gryphon NCC-42101, Excelsior class (refit).
After serving bravely in the recent war against the Dominion, the Gryphon returned -heavily damaged but salvageable- to Starbase 78, where it has spent the last months under extensive refit.
Its former crew has been granted leave, retired, transferred to other posts, and promoted according to Starfleet Command's needs. As the repairing/refit works near their end, SFC has assigned new Command Staff to the USS Gryphon. Young blood and hopes for a time of rebuilding. New dreams for a time of peace.

ACTD Noteworthy
- The Gryphon was the second of two Excelsior Class vessels to bear the name in ACTD. The first was the USS Griffon, which is a different spelling of the same name.
- Ironically, the destruction of the Gryphon can be attributed to the same man who destroyed the Griffon. Mark Tucker marked the Gryphon for destruction in the 7th ACTD-Wide Storyline - The Mythos. He felt that 'there had already been one ship named Gryphon in the game, and there shouldn't be another.'
- The Gryphon was destroyed on 10212.15 and her surviving crew was reassigned to the USS Dublin on 10301.05. The Dublin continues to protect the Federation and its peoples until this day.
- Years after its destruction, the Gryphon wreckage was plundered for parts to be incorporated into the SS Maleficent (USS Seleya Stardate 10710.28).
