The original Citroen Xsara Picasso became the UK's best-selling MPV, so the C4 Picasso had a lot to live up to when it replaced it in 2007. It did well winning our MPV of the Year award twice in a row. Not only does it have plenty of space, but its innovative design and practicality make it great to live with, too.
There are five engines on offer: 1.6-, 1.8- or 2.0-litre petrols, along with 1.6- or 2.0-litre diesels. All cars had five doors and five seats, while an EGS automatic gearbox was available on the 1.6 and 2.0 versions.
It's been around for six years, so there are plenty of C4 Picassos on the used market. Heres a list common problems to look out for when youre choosing one.
Citroen C4 Picasso braking problem
Some models built between May and December 2006 had braking issues. The check valve within the brake assistance vacuum pump may suffer from a non-conformity, which in time may reduce the braking assistance.
Citroen C4 Picasso glass roof problem
The panoramic roofs on some cars built between February and June 2007 were faulty. Incorrect bonding means theres a risk of the partial release of the glass roof moulding, such that it becomes visible to the driver. If this is not rectified, in the long term, the moulding could detach.

Citroen C4 Picasso caliper problem
Some cars built between September and October 2009 can have problematic calipers. Their fixing screws were not to the correct standard and may slacken under pressure.
Citroen C4 Picasso parking brake problem
The parking brakes on some models built between July 2006 and May 2007 were faulty. Due to a manufacturing fault, one of the cables may not be able to hold the vehicle securely. It will be indicated by a warning light on the dashboard.

A faulty ECU on some cars built between February and June 2008 could deteriorate, causing operating faults and perhaps failure of certain equipment including the wipers, lights and battery.

Some models built during December 2012 had seatbelt faults. The front seatbelts may not click in properly, meaning passengers arent securely fastened in the event of a violent impact.
Citroen C4 Picasso fuel leak problem (diesel cars)
Some cars built between July and October 2010 were prone to fuel leaks. The fuel return pipes may chafe on the diesel fuel filter. Ultimately it will result in a fuel leak and possible fire.

The seatbelt fixing bolts on cars built during November 2011 could, in some cases, not be tightened properly and could work loose, proving to be less effective in a crash.

Citroen C4 Picasso starter motor problem
The starter motor in some models built between July 2006 and October 2010 could be faulty. The wiring harness may be subject to long-term wear due to rubbing. This can cause electrical problems and, in the worst cases, fires.

A common problem with the C4 Picasso on the used market is interior build quality. Many owners report trim that is either badly scratched or falling apart. Test everything to make sure your used example is in as good a condition as possible.

One of the biggest talking points of the C4 Picasso is the automatic gearbox. When working, it isnt to everybodys taste and can take a while to get used to and find the smoothest changes. However, there have been many others complaining of the need for software updates and full clutch replacements. Make sure you assess it thoroughly on the test drive.
